xué . . . at work with schools in Cumbria

xué has been working with schools in Cumbria, and elsewhere, to help staff have a greater insight into how they might work most effectively as individuals, as a member of different teams and with their pupils. Most CPD, understandably, focuses on skill development, organisational and people management or pedagogy and curriculum change. For schools to feel confident in taking forward a transformational agenda that will continue to energise staff and pupils, it is also important for individuals to gain deeper insights into how they and others think, behave and are energised.

The focus for this work has been on the individual members of staff in the school as learners. This is based on the belief that if they gain insights into their own and others' preferred ways of viewing and responding to life they will quite naturally transfer this learning to how they view their work in school with other staff, with children and young people and with parents.

An example of one of the starting points we have used for the learning is the Myers Briggs Type Indicator. Below are comments from 2 Cumbria schools who have used this as the impetus for their development.

"This has made a huge difference to the way our staff team
work together . . . staff now have a much greater understanding
of each other and therefore greater tolerance
and an enhanced value for each others' strength within our team"

Caroline Vernon, Headteacher of Victoria Junior School

". . . becoming aware of personality types has so many
implications for us as teachers and for how we lead and manage . . .
it has been amazing how many times and in such a
wide range of circumstances that this learning
for me has been so relevant"

Jenny Dixon, Headteacher of Armathwaite First School
