Research into the needs of Parents & Carers of Children and Young People with Learning Difficulties and Disabilities (LDD)
xué's main purpose is to support individuals to be clear about their goals and to develop the insights, skills and determination to achieve them. We believe that, regardless of circumstances, each individual has the personal resources and the right to achieve their aspirations. Our work has brought us into regular contact with parents and carers of children and young people with learning difficulties and disabilities. The care and concern for their children frequently leads this group of people to ignore their own needs and to experience immense frustrations which stand in the way of them having complete control over their lives. Many tell us that they feel their own lives are often put on hold and that whilst support for young people with learning difficulties, including autism, is increasing . . .

This has led us to work with a number of parents and carers, as well as agencies that work with them, to explore ways in which we might be able to use our skills to help address this need. xué has shared this information with a wide range of agencies and staff who are committed to thinking about working with parents and carers differently. This has led to the establishment of a coaching and training programme as well as joint working with a non profit making organisation called Right 2B Me.
While xué is working directly with professional and voluntary staff, Right 2B Me is focusing on coaching individuals and groups of parents and carers. The coaching programme being used has been designed to meet the specific needs of parents and carers and is centred on them rather than on their children. By working with them in an holistic way, the organisation aims to support each parent and carer they work with to achieve their own aspirations and to feel more able to take control over their lives.

While the initial work was focused on parents and carers with children on the autistic spectrum it now covers parents and carers with children and young people across the full range of learning difficulties and disabilities.
