What is Mediation?
Mediation is a process of bringing together, by an independent and trained mediator, two or more parties where there is an unresolved conflict or a dispute...
The mediator's role is to be completely impartial and to support all parties find an agreed way forward. At no stage does the mediator express a view or make a judgement about the situation, their skill is in helping the individuals come to an understanding about what has happened and why, so that separately and then together they can reach a resolution.
Often there is a need to understand the real issues underlying the conflict and the emotional responses that such conflict manifests in people. This needs time and independence to bring objectivity and trust which in turn can bring about resolution. There are many situations where mediation may be appropriate to consider, for example; workplace disputes (employer/employee or employee/employee), unresolved grievances or complaints at work or at home, bullying/harassment, breaches of contract. This brings enormous relief to the parties, reduces costs, reduces negative feelings (which when extreme can cause ill health) and in some cases will prevent a situation going to the judicial system.
