Levels of stress and staff absence, for example, have been identified as reliable indicators of the health, wellbeing and effectiveness of an organisation as well as of its profitability and success. At an individual level, significant emotional events such as the death of a loved one, moving house or the breakup of an important relationship, have similarly been shown to be closely linked to diseases such as cancer. Too often individuals and organisations only focus on the task or issue in hand rather than looking at the bigger picture and considering the whole person. How we are physically is inextricably connected to how are mentally and emotionally.
Whether at an individual or organisational level it is essential to look at ourselves in the round. This is not only about getting the balance right between life and work – what is often called work/life balance - but also ensuring that we have a balance across all aspects of our life.
To keep staff 'well' and retain what is the most valuable resource that any organisation has, it is wise for an organisation to consider how they can include aspects of wellbeing in their professional development programme.
