What do we mean by Coaching?
Coaching is an activity that focuses on personal development. Its aim is to support an individual, or individuals within a team, to reflect on their context, skills and performance in order to gain insights to move forward and achieve excellence.
It is as applicable to those who are firing on all cylinders as well as those who have come to a sticking place. It starts from the premise that learning is on-going and that we can all lead more fulfilling and effective lives by standing back and reflecting on what we are doing, how we are feeling and where we want to go. The coaches role is to use their skills to ‘empower’, ‘encourage’, ‘facilitate’ and ‘enable’ – not to tell, impose or make judgements.
The two definitions for coaching below echo xué’s way of working.
Coaching is:
- "unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them". Whitmore (2003)
- "a professional partnership between a qualified coach and an individual or team that supports the achievement of extraordinary results, based on goals set by the individual or team". ICF ( 2005)
