FAQs

How do we decide which are the most effective/best/most reliable assessments to use?

There are a wide range of instruments available to test ability, assess personality and look at specific areas such as motivation and emotional intelligence.

The main publishers all require assessors to be trained before they can administer and interpret the tests. Training to level A enables an assessor to use ability tests while personality instruments require training to level B. To ensure that any instrument is fair to all candidates as well as adding real value to the selection process, it is important to check that it has been rigorously tested for validity and reliability.

One way of ensuring both of the above – assessor training and testing for validity and reliability – is to check that the instrument has been approved by the British Psychological Society. Practising assessors are also usually registered on the BPS's Competency Register.
