FAQs

Conflict Resolution, Mediation and ADR . . . what do they mean?

Conflict Resolution and Mediation are processes used by an independent and trained mediator to bring together two or more parties where there is an unresolved conflict or a dispute.

This is also known as Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) when used in a formal or legal context, such as within the justice system.

The mediator's role is to be completely impartial and to support all parties find an agreed way forward. At no stage does the mediator express a view or make a judgement about the situation their skill is in helping the individuals come to an understanding about what has happened and why so that separately, and then together, they can reach a resolution.

Often there is a need to understand the real issues underlying the conflict and the emotional responses that such conflict manifests in people. This needs time and independence to bring objectivity and trust which in turn can bring about resolution.
