FAQs

How do I choose a coach?

Coaching has its roots in the world of sport and its application in a wider context has been relatively recent.

While coaching has already been shown to be highly effective in supporting individuals in both their work and personal environment there is currently limited regulation.  People can set themselves up as coaches with little or no formal training.

It is important, therefore, for anybody considering coaching to assure themselves of the coach’s competence. This can be done by checking out the qualifications, experience and professional membership of a coach and to ensure that they work to a recognised code of professional practice.  Most active coaches will be members of a professional association, be involved in ongoing training and will have their work regularly supervised.

It is also important to consider what kind of coach will be most appropriate to a specific situation or context.  While all coaches will use the same techniques e.g. of listening, questioning, reflecting back, they will have had training in the use of different tools to support their work.   On occasions clients will find that some training or tools are of particular benefit e.g. the use of hypnosis in working with phobias.
