What is Action Learning?

Action Learning as a concept was developed by Reg Revans in the 1940's. As a research scientist he was used to sharing and comparing problems and ideas with other scientists to help him understand better how to take his work forward...

He applied this understanding to management development and encouraged managers to learn from each other in a way that enabled them to build on each other's ideas and discover more effective ways of working. The peer groups where he brought managers together he called Action Learning Sets.

Over the last sixty years Action Learning has developed as a methodology for individual and organisation development. The sets are usually made up of a group of six to ten people who contract to meet regularly over a period of a year to explore areas of similar interest. The members are usually people who are working at a similar level and who are willing to commit to taking forward what is agreed at the action learning set.
